Biography

Architect (DPLG), painter, set designer. Teaches at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Lyon.

Career

1952: Born in Lyon; early childhood in Paris.
1956: Two years in Brazil with his parents.
1958: Return to Paris.
1962: Attends the studio of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and paints at school.
1971: Enters the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, architecture section.
1974: Architecture placement in the Cévennes; learns masonry techniques.
1977: Travels to Rome; studies the architectural anamorphoses of the Italian Baroque and discovers fresco and coloured lime renders.
1978: Postgraduate dissertation on architectural trompe-l’œil.
1979: Qualifies as an architect (DPLG), UP6, Paris La Villette.
1980: Works in several architecture practices and on building sites. Designs the set for “Le Privilège” with Gérard Garouste, Théâtre Le Palace, Paris.
1982: Settles in Lyon. Designs and builds numerous sets (theatre, film, exhibitions) and large-format paintings.
1985: Discovers the painting of Edward Hopper. Begins painting on the theme of cinema. Meets the great film production designer Alexandre Trauner.
1994: Joins the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Lyon (ENSAL). Has taught there every year since, in the field of art and techniques of representation.
2007: Has since supervised student projects for the Fête des Lumières in Lyon, as part of ENSAL.

1985: Set design for the spa of the Hôtel Royal Monceau, PARIS. Sets for the short film “Les Aventures du Professeur Wilcox”, directed by Didier Fontan for the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie, PARIS, with Valérie Gil and Jean Bouise, produced by CLC Productions and La Villette.
1987: National mural art competition, VIERZON, on the theme of cinema — 2nd prize. Scenography of the “New York” section of the CITES-CINÉS exhibition, Grande Halle de la Villette, PARIS.
1991: Painting-fiction video “The Dark Painting”, directed by Didier Fontan, produced by Les Films des Trois Univers, PARIS, after a series of 30 paintings inspired by American film noir.

2003: Design and construction of the scenography for the exhibition “Mars et le Volcanisme Extraterrestre” for VULCANIA park (Auvergne), with Atelier “Basic Théâtral”.
2004: Filming of “STARS ET TOILES — Claude Gazier, artiste plasticien”, a 52-minute documentary shot in LYON, directed by Christophe Tourrette, produced by CINE CLASSIC / CLC Productions, with Jean-Jacques Bernard, Jean-Luc Chalumeau and Bertrand Tavernier.
